Think power naps and nothing longer. If you’re already having trouble with sleep, it’s time to reduce your nap lengths or eliminate them altogether. Fight the after dinner drowsies. Try and stay awake so that you’re tired come bedtime.

Let the light in, literally. Successful sleepers konw that sunlight helps trigger our body’s internal clock, which controls the sleep cycle. New Digital Health Monitor Announced By Samsung

At an event in San Francisco on May 28, 2014, Samsung Electronics president Young Sohn reveals a new digital health monitor, Simband prototype watch, that will reportedly track your heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiography (ECG) in real time.


SAN FRANCISCO – Electronics giant Samsung announced Wednesday plans for what it sees as a future universal data collection device for the body.


The Korean company gave reporters and developers a sneak preview of a wristband and software platform it hopes developers will use to create health trackers that can’t even be imagined yet, in the words of Samsung’s chief strategy officer Young Sohn.


Sohn wore a prototype, a sleek black band with what looks like an oversized rectangular watch face on it. It’s called the Simband, which runs open platform software so that other developers can create different modules. The prototype band itself can easily have new and different parts snapped into it.


Sohn said Samsung partners are already working on modules that can track medical data such as the oxygen content of the blood, known as a pulse ox measurement.


While the company considered many possible sites where a sensor might be placed, in the end it chose the wrist, “because it’s the one location where most people are used to wearing something 24/7,” said Ram Fish, Samsung’s head of digital health

Consumers have a right to know what is in the packaged food they buy. What is so hard with putting that information on the label?


Still a sore spot for Californians who voted in favor of 2012’s failed Prop 37—the bill that would have mandated labeling of foods containing genetically modified ingredients—the prospect of a GMO labeling law is gaining new life in a California Senate bill.


Senator Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) introduced a GMO labeling bill, SB 1381, which was passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee last week. Its next stop is a full Senate vote on May 30th.


“California is on its way to joining several states and 64 countries by labeling GMOs in our foods,” said Senator Evans in a statement. “Overwhelmingly in California and the nation, consumers simply want to know what is in the foods they eat and feed their families. This bill responds to those concerns.”


Similar to Prop 37, the voter measure heavily favored to pass that was defeated by a narrow margin in 2012, SB 1381 would require all foods sold within the state to have specific labeling if they contain genetically modified ingredients.


“This bill is a straight-forward, common-sense approach to empowering consumers,” said Evans. “If the product contains GMOs, label it. We shouldn’t be hiding ingredients. Moreover, consumer choice is the cornerstone to our free-market society.”

Does diet soda help you lose weight? Here’s a recent study that claims “drinking diet soda is better than water when it comes to losing weight”.



Most people choose artificially-sweetened soda over regular soda to avoid packing on extra pounds. But what if you already choose diet? Would it be helpful to quit that too?


Dr. Jim Hill says he gets this question all the time from patients in his weight loss program at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.


With funding from the American Beverage Association, Hill helped design a study that divided approximately 300 adults into two groups: One group would continue drinking diet, and the other group — referred to in the study as the “water group” — would go cold turkey. The study was published in the journal Obesity.


Both participant groups received intensive coaching on successful techniques for weight loss, including regular feedback on the meals they logged in journals.


“The results, to us, were not at all surprising,” says Hill.


While the typical participant banned from drinking diet sodas lost 9 pounds over 12 weeks, those allowed to continue drinking diet soda lost, on average, 13 pounds in the same time period. That’s a 4-pound difference.

Hill says that in his clinical experience, many people who have successfully lost significant weight “are heavy users of noncaloric sweeteners.”


But why was the diet soda group more successful? The most likely reason is that this group had the easier task.

Cutting calories and boosting exercise takes a lot of willpower. Trying to simultaneously give up something else you regularly enjoy — such as diet soda — taxes your ability to stay the course. We’ve all been taught that carrots would keep our eyes sharp as a child, but as an adult, it looks like fruit such as apricots are even more important for keeping your sight. Data reported in a study published in the Archives of Opthamology indicates that eating 3 or more servings of fruit per day may lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, by 36%, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.


In this study, which involved over 100,000 women and men, researchers evaluated the effect of study participants’ consumption of fruits such as apricots among others; the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E; and carotenoids on the development of early ARMD or neovascular ARMD, a more severe form of the illness associated with vision loss. Food intake information was collected periodically for up to 18 years for women and 12 years for men.


While, surprisingly, intakes of vegetables, antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids were not strongly related to incidence of either form of ARMD, fruit intake was definitely protective against the severe form of this vision-destroying disease. Three servings of apricots may sound like a lot to eat each day, but by simply tossing a them into your morning smoothie or topping off a cup of yogurt or just snacking on an them and you’ve reached this goal.

Study Reveals One More Reason To Be A Vegan

In the news today there are reports of a study released that shows that a low-carbohydrate, vegan diet “Eco-Atkins” could also reduce the risk of heart disease. That makes sense, not eating all that animal fat. Eating vegetables and not meat does pay off. One more reason to be a vegan.

According to the study conducted by the team of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada head by Dr. David Jenkins, a low-carbohydrate vegan diet – named as “Eco-Atkins” is effective for weight loss.


Now the team found out that the “Eco-Atkins” may also reduce the risk of cardiac disease by 10% over 10 years.


Dr. Jenkins research resulted that many low-carbohydrate diets have been associated with weight loss. But he notes that most of these diets include eating animal proteins and fats, which can increase cholesterol.


But the diet having high vegetable proteins and oils have been allied with a reduced risk of heart disease by reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL the “bad cholesterol”. LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of blood vessels narrow the walls and cause blockages, resulting increases the risk of heart disease.


Eco-Atkins diet – It consists of low carbohydrates and high vegetable proteins and oils food, the team wanted to see whether it could reduce heart disease risk.

The researchers evaluated 39 overweight men and women between April 2005 and November 2006.


They were divided into two groups:


  • Group A- followed the Eco-Atkins diet for 6 months.

  • Group B- followed a high-carbohydrate low-fat diet for 6 months.

  • Those who followed the Eco-Atkins diet have to eat around 60% of their estimated caloric requirements that should be consumed each day to maintain their current weight.


    Group A were told they should intend to get 43% from fats, 31% from proteins and 26% of calories from carbohydrates. Mainly from vegetables and vegetable oils.


    Observation:


    At the end of the research tenure, the team found that Group A, who followed the Eco-Atkins diet had 10% lower cholesterol and lost an average of 4 pounds extra weight, compared with Group B, who followed the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet.

    Last November, there was a premature birth of a little girl in Colombia that was declared dead after the doctors could not hear her heartbeat.


    They sent her body to the morgue in a little box as is the practice in these cases. According to the news story at semana.com, her body stayed in the morgue for 12 hours.

    When the nurse went to get the body so she could return it to the heartbroken family, the baby started crying. She immediately rushed the baby out of the morgue and into intensive care.


    The little girl now named Milagros (Miracles) was sent to the Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus clinic in the capital Bogota accompanied by her aunt Reyes Hinestroza. She started receiving treatment for her underdeveloped lungs in intensive care.


    “Doctors say that a baby’s soft heartbeat at birth can lead them to believe the infant is dead… but a mistake like this is unfathomable.”

    Makes 4 cups


    1½ cup gluten-free rolled oats, 4 ounces


    ½ cup buckwheat, 3 ounces


    ¼ cup millet, 1 ¾ ounces


    ¼ cup red (or plain) quinoa, 1 ½ ounces


    ¾ cup pistachios, coarsely chopped


    ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt


    ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom


    ¼ teaspoon ground ginger


    ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon


    2 tablespoons butter (or coconut oil)


    ¼ cup honey


    ½ teaspoon vanilla extract


    Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine the first 6 ingredients. Heat the spices, butter and honey until butter is melted, and stir to combine. Add vanilla and stir once more. Pour butter mixture over grains, mixing thoroughly to coat the grains completely. Spread the mixture into an even layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake until the oats are golden, 25 to 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Let cool completely and break into chunks.

    Gluten and Dairy Free Chocolate Fudge Cake - Healthy Yummy Recipe

    Healthy Sticky Chocolate Fudge Cake Gluten, Dairy + Grain Free

    1/2 cup ground flaxseed

    1/2 cup cocoa powder

    1 tsp baking soda

    pinch of salt

    1 tsp vanilla

    6 tbsp honey

    1 egg (see notes)

    1/2 cup + 2 tbsp pumpkin/squash puree

    2 tbsp cashew butter

    1/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips

    Glaze:

    2 heaped tsp of powdered raw sugar (see notes) (or powdered sugar)

    1 tsp cocoa powder

    almond milk

    Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C)


    Stir together the flax, cocoa, soda and salt in a bowl.


    In a jug, whisk together the vanilla, honey, egg, pumpkin and cashew butter with a fork. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.


    Pour into a greased, lined 1lb loaf pan (line it with a bit of an overhang so you can lift the cake out easily). Scatter over the chocolate chips and push them into the batter. Bake for 40-50 minutes until the cake doesn’t wobble when you shake the pan (the skewer test doesn’t really work with this).


    Stir together the powdered raw sugar and cocoa powder, then stir in almond milk until you get quite a thick glaze (just start with a teaspoon first and add more as needed). Pour over the hot cake and spread out evenly using the back of a spoon.

    • Use of arch support: In many cases of foot tendonitis, an arch support is placed below the leg so that it brings peace to the foot. In such a position, the foot feels safe and movement is also restricted. This inclined position is ideal for recovery and the patient himself feels better, as it allows the tendon to heal faster and doesn’t feel any irritation placing the foot on a mattress or a cushion. This is a better option than them.

    • Elevation of the foot: In many cases just elevating the foot does much good for the foot. But the elevation is conditional. As you must elevate your foot above the level of your heart and lie down on a straight back. It might be a bit irritating, yet, it helps a lot in reduction of inflammation and further swelling is controlled. The pain also seems to get better and lessons with time. You allow your foot to rest and stay at a fix position in this case which is good sign of recovery.

    $5 Million Settlement For Deceptive Marketing Of Cereal

    In the new recently this large cereal manufacturer reached a settlement over a claim that their packaging says “natural” when in fact it may not be 100%.

    “All Natural” and “100% Natural” will no longer be seen on some of the popular Kellogg’s cereal brands, including Kashi and Bear Naked brands, the company announced after settling a class-action lawsuit for more than $5 million.


    The largest breakfast cereal manufacturer in the world faced a string of lawsuits in recent years, culminating into a single case in 2011 that cited consumer fraud and deception in labeling of its cereals as “natural” when in fact many contained synthetic and genetically modified ingredients, including pyridoxine hydrochloride, calcium pantothenate or hexane-processed soy oil.


    According to Reuters, the settlement must be approved by “a federal judge in San Diego overseeing the case before the suit is dismissed.”


    In a statement released by Kellogg last week, company spokesperson Kris Charles said the brand’s Kashi and Bear Naked lines “provide comprehensive information about our foods to enable people to make well-informed choices.”


    “We stand behind our advertising and labeling practices,” she explained. “We will comply with the terms of the settlement agreement by the end of the year and will continue to ensure our foods meet our high quality and nutrition standards, while delivering the great taste people expect.”


    The settlement would require that Kashi products remove “All Natural” and “Nothing Artificial” from its product labels and advertising, and Bear Naked’s brand would remove “100% Natural” and “100% Pure and Natural” from some of its products. Read More

    Dog Waited Eight Days To See His Owner - See The Video Of The Amazing Story

    A dog waited eight days in a hospital parking lot to be able to see his owner, a homeless man that was hospitalized in Brazil after a random attack.


    The man, Lauri da Costa, of Passo Fundo, entered the hospital after being smashed in the face with a rock. While in the hospital, it was found that he had melanoma on his face and had an operation which kept him hospitalized for quite some time. The dog patiently waited outside until he could see his owner.

    Lauri da Costa, a homeless man from the city of Passo Fundo, Brazil may not have much in the way of material possessions, but he is rich in other ways — especially when it comes to the loyal companionship of his best friend, his dog.


    On March 31, Lauri fell victim to a random assault during which a rock was thrown that struck him in the face. Injured, he then made his way to the local hospital to get treated, while his pet, a 4-year-old mutt named Seco, sat patiently out front.


    But what was suppose to be a brief visit to the emergency room became an extended stay. Once there, physicians discovered that Lauri had melanoma on his face, and would need to be hospitalized as he awaited surgery to have it removed. Meanwhile, Seco kept vigil outside the hospital doors for his master to return.


    As the days dragged on, staff took notice of the dog and made sure he had plenty of water and food as he waited. After the eighth day, even though Lauri was still recovering, doctors made an exception allowing the man and his loyal dog to be reunited early — a touching scene captured on video.

    Minimally invasive dentistry involves detecting a cavity when it is very small and doing small treatments – removing small amounts of tooth structure and putting in small fillings.


    Proponents of this type of dentistry (both conventional and holistic dentists) cite the benefits of having tiny parts of the tooth removed and tiny fillings placed as opposed to having large holes drilled and large fillings placed.


    Minimally invasive dentistry gives people the false impression that they are choosing something healthy for their teeth by having small amounts of tooth structure removed, and that the dentist doing small treatments and fillings is providing a great holistic service to people.


    Of course when you give someone those options – small filling or big filling – everyone is going to agree that a small filling is better. But what is so disturbing about minimally invasive dentistry is that it implies the only options are small or big fillings. But there is a third option that people are not told. And that option is to have no filling. If you had a choice between small, big or no filling, now tell me what you prefer.

    The father of a girl dubbed ‘Britain’s Youngest Mum’ has apparently broken his silence and told a radio station he is proud of the 12-year-old schoolgirl.


    A man claiming to be the father of the girl who gave birth last week, after having conceived while still in Primary School, phoned into the Nick Ferrari show on LBC, to say he was proud of his daughter.


    Using a false name in order to protect the identity of the child he said: “Shame doesn’t come into it. We’re so proud of her.”


    “She’s only my little girl, whether she’s done that or not. There are lots of routes kids this age can take. Lots of kids are on drugs. She brought something beautiful into the world and we’re all proud of her.”


    “We only found out she was pregnant a month ago. I cried, as any father would do, breaking down with emotion.”


    “That means she was eight months pregnant. The baby is going to come into the world no matter what. You can just be supportive about it.”


    “The families on both sides are going to be very supportive about it.”


    According to reports in The Sun newspaper the girl became pregnant while at primary school, shortly after beginning a relationship with a 13-year-old boy who lives near her home in London.


    The couple have the lowest combined age of any British parents in history.


    A source told the newspaper that both sets of grandparents were supportive and that the couple intend to stick together and raise their child.


    “They’re very into each other, totally in love. She is obsessed with him. She sees this as true love. They want to get married,” the source said.


    According to reports the 12-year-old girl, who currently lives with her mother – who at 27 is the UK’s youngest ever grandmother, will return to school in September.


    At 12 years three months, the girl is five months younger than the nation’s previous youngest mother Tressa Middleton who gave birth in Edinburgh aged 12 years eight months in 2006.

    Alarming predictions that the premiums for individual health plans would skyrocket in the first year of Obamacare turned out to be largely unfounded. But the roughly 8 million people who bought insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges may suffer some sticker shock as they begin using their benefits.


    That’s because many of the plans make consumers shoulder a lot of the costs of their medical care through deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance—payments the newly insured may not have grasped when they signed up.


    Deductibles—the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurance starts paying—are a good example. In some plans, the cost of visits to a primary care doctor are covered with just a co-pay, while others require patients to pay for all or part of those office visits until the payments reach their deductible. Some plans have separate deductibles for prescription drugs and medical care, while others combine them. (All plans are required by law to cover preventive care, such as an annual checkup, at no charge to patients.)


    The median deductible for silver-level Obamacare plans—the type most people on the exchanges bought—was $2,500, but the deductibles for an individual ranged from as little as zero to as high as $6,250. That’s close to the maximum out-of-pocket cost Obamacare plans can charge.
