Healthier Arteries Linked To Eating Fruits And Vegetables

As you know, many of the things that are known to give us good health like vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants usually come from eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

In general, healthy body weight, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and living longer are also benefits of eating these fruits and vegetables rather than meat.

Women, the younger you start eating mostly fruits and vegetables, the better off you will be later in life, the below study shows.

Study shows lower prevalence of plaque build-up in women, but not men

WASHINGTON (March 28, 2014) — Women who ate a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables as young adults were much less likely to have plaque build-up in their arteries 20 years later compared with those who consumed lower amounts of these foods, according to research to be presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 63rd Annual Scientific Session. This new finding reinforces the importance of developing healthy eating habits early in life.

Previous studies have found that middle-aged adults whose diet consists of a high proportion of fruits and vegetables are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke, but the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption during young adulthood and heart disease later in life was less clear. To study this concept, researchers evaluated the association between dietary intake of fruits and vegetables in young adults and the presence of coronary artery calcification (CAC) 20 years later. CAC scores, which were obtained using a CT scan, provide a direct estimate of the amount of plaque in the coronary arteries.

“It’s an important question because lifestyle behaviors, such as a heart healthy diet, are the foundation of cardiovascular prevention and we need to know what dietary components are most important,” said Michael D. Miedema, M.D., M.P.H., a cardiologist at the Minneapolis Heart Institute, and the lead investigator of the study.

Specifically, women who reported consuming the most fruits and vegetables (eight to nine servings a day for a 2,000-calorie diet) in their 20s were 40 percent less likely to have calcified plaque in their arteries in their 40s compared with those who ate the least amount (three to four servings a day) during the same time period. This association persisted even after researchers accounted for other lifestyle behaviors, as well as for their current-day diets, further demonstrating the role dietary patterns at younger ages may play.

“These findings confirm the concept that plaque development is a lifelong process, and that process can be slowed down with a healthy diet at a young age,” Miedema said. “This is often when dietary habits are established, so there is value in knowing how the choices we make in early life have lifelong benefits.”

Surprisingly, the same benefit did not hold true for men, which warrants further investigation.

High Prices Squeezing Limes

Missing that lime in your beer or margarita when you go to the bar lately? Prices of limes has risen sharply in the United States and Mexico. That’s making products made with limes more expensive.

limes

About 98 percent of limes consumed in the U.S. come from Mexico. But our neighbors to the south are feeling seriously squeezed by a shortage of the beloved citrus fruit.

At a Mexico City outdoor market, vendor Alberto Reyes Stanislao tries to entice passersby to buy his limes with sweet talk and coaxing. But with limes going for 50 pesos a kilo — about $1.75 a pound, or three times the normal price — his sales have plummeted 50 percent. And he says he’s getting an earful from customers.

“They say I’m selling green gold. One customer told me that instead of eating the limes, she was going to wear them as a necklace,” says Reyes.

In the U.S., grocery stores are now charging an average of 53 cents for a single lime, compared to 21 cents per fruit at this time last year, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A combination of factors has affected Mexican production. Heavy rains late last year in the states of Michoacan, Guerrero and Veracruz hurt the crop. And in Colima, a big lime-producing state, a bacterium is infecting trees.

Should Sedatives Be Given To Toddlers?

Our hearts go out to the parents of this little girl. It is an extremely sad accident.

HONOLULU (AP) — A 3-year-old Hawaii girl who suffered a heart attack during a dentist visit likely died because of the drugs given to sedate her, according to a medical examiner’s autopsy report.

Finley Puleo Boyle, of Kailua, probably died because of the sedatives and local anesthesia that were administered during her December dental procedure, Honolulu Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Christopher Happy concluded in his autopsy report. He classified the death as an accident.

The girl lapsed into a coma Dec. 3 in the office of Dr. Lilly Geyer at Island Dentistry for Children. She died Jan 3. The office has since closed.

The autopsy report said the previously healthy girl had no signs of underlying heart problems or an allergic reaction to the array of sedatives and anesthetic she received in preparation for cavity fillings and root canals, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://ow.ly/uPJl4 ) reported Friday.

The medical examiner noted her teeth were in good shape: “the oral cavity has native dentition in good repair.”

Finley received five drugs, according to the report, including Demerol, hydroxyzine and chlorohydrate. She was also given laughing gas and an injection of a local anesthetic, lidocaine with epinephrine.

“Immediately following the lidocaine injection, the decedent became unresponsive and went into cardiopulmonary arrest,” Happy said in his report.

Parents Ashley and Evan Boyle filed a negligence lawsuit while their only child was in a coma. Their attorney, Rick Fried, would not comment on the autopsy report.

Breastfeeding Mom Branded a Tramp: Find Out How She Is Reacting

Emily Slough Breastfeeding MumEmily Slough, a 27 year old mother, recently had her picture taken when she stopped in a descreet place in Rugely,

England to breastfeed her eight month old baby. The photo taker posted it on Facebook and labeled her a tramp for

letting her baby “feast on her nipple in town”.

According to the article at Mail Online, she was so horrified at someone taking her picture defaming her character,

she has organized a breastfeeding protest.

While being scorned for breastfeeding her baby in public, she says she knows what is best for her baby. She

explained that breastfeeding moms are just tending to feeding their baby. Breastfed babies get fed on demand and

need to be fed when hungry. She also said ‘Where I was sitting was pretty private – it was quite out of the way. you

had to look pretty hard to notice – it was pretty discreet.’

Her peaceful protest has elicited the support of over 1200 women.

Should GMO Be On The Food Labels?

According to NaturalNews.com, more and more Americans are finding out about the dangers of genetically modified organism called GMOs pose to the worlds food system. Some evidence that genetically modifying foods have changed the global food supply in negative ways is the rise in food allergies.
gmo

At the very minimum, genetically modified food should be included in the requirements for labeling ingredients in food.

Many states have been stepping up and requiring this to be disclosed on the food labels. As reported by Prevention magazine, Connecticut and Maine are two states that are moving in that direction…

The reason why it is so important to require GMO labeling is because of their potential to cause ill effects in those who consume them. Besides the fact that such crops have never been adequately tested for safety, the EWG says that GM foods are increasing the amount of herbicide-resistant weeds that no longer die when they are sprayed with Monsanto’s Roundup, which the seeds were bred to resist.

As such, farmers are increasingly being forced to use more and more potent and toxic herbicides in order to compensate. Also, the widespread adoption of GM crops by American farmers has endangered organic farming due to unintended contamination of organic crops (mostly through agricultural run-off and cross-pollination, when pollen blows from a GMO farm to an organic one).

EWG “cites one estimate from the Union of Concern Scientists that the potential lost income for farmers growing organic corn may total $90 million annually, all because their crops get unknowingly contaminated by nearby GMO farmers,” Prevention reported.

So, without labeling, how do you avoid GM foods? Here are some ways you can reduce your exposure:

Regrow Your Food From Scraps

One obvious benefit to regrowing your food from scraps is the cost. You will definitely save money on your groceries when you grow your own food. More of the flavors, textures, and smells of the food you eat that you grow yourself is also an added benefit. Your food will become more interesting. When you regrow your food from scraps, you end up tasting your food more since it is fresh. This is good because the more you grow your own foods, the more you will eat natural, healthy foods.
regrow scraps

By NaturalHealthWarriors

Regrowing your food from scraps can give you multiple benefits. You can start growing your own food that

you find that you like from the store, all the while avoiding the ‘factory farming’ problems that we get from the grocery store. No pesticides, no long trips on the truck from the farming areas, many times from other countries, for your food. This is cool way to find food that you like and start regrowing it at home while eating healthier and saving money. You can also use this technique to replant from your garden to save time and clone the most favorable plants.

We found this great list below of 15 foods can can be regrown from scraps onmrshappyhomemaker.com

Let’s count them out – from 1 to 15…

1, 2, 3, & 4. Spring Onions, Leeks, Scallions, & Fennel

These are the ones I regrow the very most, I always have a mason jar of green onions regrowing above my kitchen sink. The technique is quite simple. Once you are done with them (any of the above four), simply place the root end in a jar of water & it will begin to regrow within just a few days. Just make sure to replace the water with fresh as need be.

15 Foods That Can Be Regrown from Scraps

5. Lemongrass

You can regrow lemongrass the same way you regrow the green onions. Simply place the root ends in a glass of water, refreshing the water as needed. You will want to wait to harvest your lemongrass until it is about 12 inches tall.

USDA Sued Over Genetically Modified Alfalfa

Because of its high protein content and highly digestible fiber, alfafa is primarily used as feed for high-producing dairy cows and secondarily for beef cattle, horses, sheep, and goats.

An article posted by the LA Times discusses fears that genetically modified alfalfa could contaminate traditional alfalfa fields since the crop is pollinated by bees.

alfafa

A food safety group filed a lawsuit in hopes of forcing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to release documents in court that could explain why the federal agency approved genetically engineered alfalfa despite its misgivings about environmental safety.

The Washington-based Center for Food Safety said Thursday the USDA may have come under pressure by seed giant Monsanto Co. to grant approval of its Roundup Ready alfalfa, which is designed to withstand multiple applications of herbicide.

“USDA determined Monsanto’s Roundup Ready alfalfa posed significant environmental and economic harms and initially proposed placing restrictions on it. Yet the agency went ahead and granted full unrestricted approval one month later,” Andrew Kimbrell, executive director for the Center for Food Safety, said in a prepared statement. “Did the White House intervene? Did Monsanto pressure the agency? The fact is we don’t know, and unless the court orders USDA to hand over these documents we may never know.”

[Updated 2:50 p.m.]

In an e-mailed statement, Monsanto dismissed the Center for Food Safety’s characterization of the biotech alfalfa.

“Many thousands of farmers across the U.S. currently grow Roundup Ready alfalfa, corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets and canola,” the company said. “Each of these crops was subjected to thorough scientific review by three separate federal agencies before reaching the market; none presents the types of risks CFS alleges.”

The USDA did not reply to a request for comment.

How to Help Your Child Get to Sleep

Do you have a problem getting your child to go to sleep? Below is an article from Natural Health News that discusses a study on omega-3 fatty acids that could actually help your child sleep better.
sleeping child

As part of  a  randomised placebo-controlled pilot study, researchers at the University of Oxford, UK, explored whether supplementing with algal source DHA would improve the sleep of 362 children.

The children who took part in the study were not selected for sleep problems, but were all struggling readers at a mainstream primary school.

However, at the outset, the parents filled in a child sleep questionnaire which revealed that 40% of the children had clinical-level sleep problems, such as resistance to bedtime, anxiety about sleep and constant waking in the course of the night.

The researchers also used bloodstick samples to determine levels of omega-3 and omega-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA).

Better sleep

Over the 16 weeks of the study the children were given daily supplements containing 600mg of algal source DHA or a placebo of corn or soybean oil. The researchers also fitted wrist sensors to 43 of the children who were poor sleepers to monitor their movements in bed over five nights.

At the end of the study children with higher blood levels of the long-chain omega-3 DHA (the main omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain) had nearly one hour (58 minutes) more sleep and 7 fewer waking episodes per night compared with the children taking placebo.

In addition, higher ratios of DHA in relation to the long-chain omega-6 fatty acid AA (arachidonic acid) are also associated with fewer sleep problems.

What Is Earthing?

What is this a picture of?

These are microscope images of blood taken from three individuals just before and after forty minutes of grounding (or earthing).

(The before images are on the left, the after on the right.) The pictures clearly show a dramatic thinning and decoupling of the blood cells.

According to the book “Earthing” the practice of earthing is basically coupling your body to the Earth’s surface energy by walking, sitting or sleeping outside in direct contact with the Earth.

The reasons why we need to walk barefoot and tap into the primal energy of the Earth.

  • Inflammation has been linked to nearly every degenerative disease you can think of — cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, glaucoma, autoimmune disorders, cancer and many more. Earthing reduces chronic inflammation and related chronic pain.

  • Earthing neutralizes the free radicals in our bodies, significantly reducing oxidative stress and readily recovers us from injuries, trauma and exhaustion.

  • Earthing recommended for anyone with an auto-immune condition

  • Grounding affects your DNA immediately

  • When you ground to the electron-enriched earth, an improved balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system occurs.

  • Enhances circulation, leading to more energy

  • The Earth is the natural antidote for electron deficiency to achieve a healthy balance.

  • Improved sleep

  • Reduces hormonal and menstrual symptoms

Dr. James Oschman rel=”nofollow”, Ph.D. biophysicist and pioneer Earthing researcher, says, “The moment your foot touches the Earth… your physiology changes. An immediate normalization begins. and an anti-inflammatory switch is turned on. People stay inflamed because they never connect to the Earth, the source of free electrons, which can neutralize the free radicals in the body that cause disease and cellular destruction.”

How to Relieve A Stiff Neck Naturally

Do you need relief from a stiff neck? Ever find that you wake up in the morning and wonder why you feel like you slept up against the headboard and your neck is as stiff as a board?

According to the Health Digest, there are several tricks that you can use to loosen that stiff neck and move on with your day as much as possible:

stiffNeck

1) First and foremost, it is important to remember the huge role that applying heat has in relaxing muscles.

In between using ice packs to numb the pain and reduce inflammation, use heat to bring fresh healing blood to the area and make your pain dissipate more quickly. (This is a good opportunity to refreeze that bag of peas too – unless this happens a lot in which case you are probably fully stocked with frozen peas, sweet corn and, dare I say, frozen carrots!)

2) If you have been subjected to a cold or damp environment prior to your neck injury, you may want to try sipping cinnamon and turmeric in warm water to release the muscle contraction and bring down inflammation.

3) St Johns Wort, valerian root or vervain tea can be used to reduce pain.

The cooked herbs can then be prepared as a warm compress and used on the muscle (or just wrap the wet herbs in an old pillow case and press on your muscle). In a bind, try using chamomile tea bags.

4) Try applying fresh horse radish or mustard oil to the muscle to relieve stiffness, but only leave on for a few minutes at a time to prevent numbness and burning.

Are BPA-Free Plastics Really Safe?

Many plastic products today are marketed as BPA-free. However, according to an article published in the March/April issue of Mother Jones magazine, research has shown that many of those “BPA-free” substitute products also have estrogenic qualities, and therefore might be just as dangerous to human health.

ChildSippyCup

EACH NIGHT AT DINNERTIME, a familiar ritual played out in Michael Green’s home: He’d slide a stainless steel sippy cup across the table to his two-year-old daughter, Juliette, and she’d howl for the pink plastic one. Often, Green gave in. But he had a nagging feeling. As an environmental-health advocate, he had fought to rid sippy cups and baby bottles of the common plastic additive bisphenol A (BPA), which mimics the hormone estrogen and has been linked to a long list of serious health problems. Juliette’s sippy cup was made from a new generation of BPA-free plastics, but Green, who runs the Oakland, California-based Center for Environmental Health, had come across research suggesting some of these contained synthetic estrogens, too.

Brain Rejuvenation With Folic Acid

Do you know the health benefits of folic acid? No wonder the pediatrician recommends increased folic acid supplements for pregnant women. The article below talks about the benefits of folic acid for people of all ages.

A detailed study of gene pathways has shown that folic acid directly activates the proliferation of neural stem cells, which are required for development and repair of your nervous system. Folic acid was able to modify various aspects of DNA, methylating genes, so as to induce this potent brain-rejuvenation response.

There is little doubt that if we are to keep up with the wear and tear in our lives, we need support for activating the various pools of adult stem cells so that we can better maintain the health and efficiency of important body functions. Keeping our nerves in tip-top condition is a top priority, since nerves regulate body functions.

The most biologically active form of folic acid is called 5-Methyltetrahydrofolic acid. This is the form of the nutrient your nerves use and is the form that directly acts on your DNA. Plain dietary folic acid or cheap dietary supplements of folic acid must be converted into this active form, which is not all that easy for many people, especially if they are already struggling with their energy level. Indeed, 15% of the U.S. population has gene weaknesses that reduce or prevent proper activation of folic acid into the 5-Methyltetrahydrofolic acid. 5-Methyltetrahydrofolic acid is the best form of folic acid supplementation for anyone, and for some it is absolutely vital.

Vitamin supplements - Do They Work?

Do you supplement your diet with vitamins? Below is an article that discusses the recent research findings about the effectiveness of taking vitamin dietary supplements to prevent cancer or heart disease.VitaminMineralSupplementsAisle

Article by Susan Perry

There is no good evidence that vitamin or mineral supplements protect against either cancer or heart disease.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force officially updated its recommendation on the use of multivitamin supplements for the prevention of cancer or heart disease.

The recommendation by this independent panel of experts is essentially the same as the draft version released for public comment last fall: There is no good evidence that vitamin or mineral supplements protect against either cancer or heart disease.

In fact, the task force concludes that taking supplements of beta-carotene (vitamin A) may actually increase the risk of developing lung cancer, particularly among smokers. They thus recommend against the use of beta-carotene supplements, either alone or in combination with other supplements.

Their overall recommendation, the task force stresses, applies only to healthy adults and not to children, women who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, or people with a chronic illness or a specific diagnosed nutritional deficiency, such as Wernicke-Korsakoff disease or pellegra .

No substitute for healthful foods

I reported on the draft version of this recommendation last November, but I feel it’s important to bring attention to it again. For, as the Task Force notes, supplements continue to be promoted for the prevention of heart disease and cancer, and surveys have found that many physicians and nurses recommend dietary supplements to their patients for general health and wellness.

Yet, as the Task Force stresses — along with other major health organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, the American Institute for Cancer Research, the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians — vitamin and mineral supplements are no substitute for eating a variety of healthy foods, most notably, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Still, despite the growing number of medical experts who point out how wasteful and potentially harmful these products are, Americans continue to believe in the supplement industry’s hype. In 2010, U.S. consumers spent $28.1 billion on vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements.
