Why has at least half of the world’s wild orangutans disappeared in the last 20 years?

Why has at least half of the world’s wild orangutans disappeared in the last 20 years?

Are we ravaging forests to obtain a food product that’s not even healthy in the first place?

Palm oil has been sold to the world as yet another increasingly sustainable and healthy alternative to other vegetable oils. It is now the most widely produced edible vegetable oil globally, passing soybean oil eight years ago. Following the repetitive formula which comes out of the food industry decade after decade–any time the next big economical, versatile and immensely popular of edible oils come along to be integrated into thousands of food products, inevitably we find out that they’re not so great for our health or the environment. Palm oil is no exception from this formula and here’s why you need to get this oil out of your diet for good.

Palm Fruit oil is now more widely produced than soy bean oil. It is taken from the fruit of the oil palm tree. It comes from the same part of the palm tree as regular palm oil.

At least half of the world’s wild orangutans have disappeared in the last 20 years; biologically viable populations of orangutans have been radically reduced in size and number; and 80 percent of the orangutan habitat has either been depopulated or totally destroyed. The trend shows no sign of abating: government maps of future planned land use show more of the same, on an increasing scale.

Can You Juice Marijuana? Just See What This Did To This Woman"s Health

Do you think you can juice marijuana, or the cannabis leaves? Just what will it do to your health? Read this article below that we found at NaturalSociety.com on just what juicing marijuana did to this woman’s health.

canabisju

(NaturalSociety TV) More and more we are beginning to understand that marijuana is far more than a street-level ‘drug’. In fact, research shows that it’s a healing plant — and it doesn’t have to get you high. And as we learn more about this healing plant, we learn there are really a multitude of uses and methods to obtaining its benefits.

One of the latest methods of reaping its benefits is juicing, as one woman learned the hard way.

Juicing is a great way to get the best stuff out of plant materials. It makes digestion easy and allows your body to really make the most of what you put into it. So, it stands to reason that many of the benefits associated with smoking, vaporizing, or eating cannabis could be enhanced through juicing.

High-aside, some argue juicing raw cannabis to be the most beneficial, and it does all of this without getting users stoned. Raw cannabis is not psychoactive. The beneficial compounds within are known as cannabidiols (CBD) and they are not the THC responsible for getting you high.

Instead, as NaturalNews reports, CBDs “bridge the gap of neurotransmission in the central nervous system, including in the brain by providing a two-way system of communication that completes a positive ‘feedback loop’”.

Dr. William Courtney, founder of Cannabis International, is largely considered the biggest proponent of raw cannabis juicing. His patient (and wife) has also become a visible advocate after a video featuring her testimony went viral.

98 Year-Old Man Beat Lung Cancer Without Chemotherapy

Farmer-Gardener-Harvest-Crops-Vegetables-SoilThe 98 year-old man has been cancer-free for over 30 years and he did not have chemotherapy. According to this article from NaturalNews.com, Greek native Stamatis Moraitis was diagnosed with lung cancer and told he had just nine months to live. At the time, he was in his mid-sixties.

Here’s a glimpse at his timeline, but don’t worry about breaking out a box of tissues: six months into his journey, he started feeling significantly better. Twenty five years later, when he went to visit his U.S. doctors during a trip from his native Greek Island, Ikaria, he learned that his doctors had died. Today, he’s living life to the fullest as a vibrant 98-year old.

Fresh, healthy foods key to combating cancer

His secret? In addition to surrounding himself with loving relationships with friends and family and getting plenty of exercise, he plants foods in his own garden and tends to his olive grove daily. He is cancer-free, simply because of the lifestyle he lives in Greece, and his choice to shun chemotherapy, drugs or any kind of therapy.

One of her top suggestions is to "Eat plants, avoid animal products, consume lots of olive oil, avoid processed foods . . . " and to stay surrounded by like-minded people.

Best foods to help fight lung cancer

While most fresh fruits and vegetables have nutrients that are good for the body, certain ones in particular stand out when it comes to fighting off lung cancer.

According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, people who ate apples regularly had a 60 percent lower risk of lung cancer compared to those who did not consume the flavonoid-rich fruit.

Other foods linked to lung cancer prevention include cruciferous vegetables such as kale, cabbage and broccoli.

Olive oil, a large part of a Mediterranean diet, has also been shown to reduce the risk of cancers ranging from colon cancers to breast cancer. Consumption of extra-virgin olive oil daily can essentially deactivate cancer cells that try to survive and destroy the body. It"s been shown effective in keeping a range of cancers at bay, from breast cancers to stomach cancers.

Do It Yourself Herbal Remedies -- Want To Get An Idea How To Get Started?

Want some tips to get started making your own herbal remedies? This article by Amy Jira posted on MindBodyGreen.com is a very entertaining article about herby medicinals.

HerbalRemedies

Back in the olden days (and even in the not-so-olden past and present homesteading days), a stillroom was a necessity in every rural home. This was a designated space (think a modern-day pantry of sorts) which housed herbs, jars, recipe books, tinctures, teas, and preserving agents (like alcohol, honey, and vinegar). This room was where the woman of the house (yes, most often it was the woman) created cosmetics, home brews, preserves, and a year’s worth (at least) of herby medicinals. Can you imagine?

I would love to travel back and just step foot into one of these medieval distilling rooms — think of the medicinals, recipes, and lore passed down from generation to generation, all housed in one well-organized room? I like to think of herbs hanging from the rafters, intriguing, hand-made bottles and jars holding remedies long lost and forgotten.

Intrigued yet? I certainly was. I figure everyone who has any intention of making his or her own remedies should probably have a stillroom of his or her own. Don’t have an extra, conveniently empty room off your kitchen? Meh, not a problem. Your stillroom can be a designated cupboard, a set of shelves, or even an outdoor building (when I lived in Maine, mine was in the old ice house on the property). Really, the only thing you need are herbs, supplies, and recipes, all housed in one convenient location…Read More

These Elephants Are Acting Like They Are Drunk...See What Is Making Them This Way

These funny pictures show these elephants staggering around after eating. What is it that they have eaten that is making them act like they are drunk, you ask.

We found these pictures that were taken by field guide Ross Couper who works for safari company Singita.

The article over at the dailymail.co.uk says that these elephants were eating marula fruit in Kruger National Park.

It goes on to say that when large mammals eat marula fruit, it has an intoxicating effect on them. See for yourself in the below pictures.

Ross Couper, a field guide, came upon these elephants.

He saw these elephants acting very strange.

drunk-elephants3

So he got out his camera and took these pictures.

drunk-elephants4

It seems like they are drunk. This happens when they eat a certain fruit that grows in the area.

drunk-elephants5

Although, it’s possible, says the article at dailymail.co.uk, they were a little tipsy from eating the beetle pupae that live in the bark of marula trees.

drunk-elephants6

No matter which one they ate…

drunk-elephants7

It’s pretty funny that they react this way.

drunk-elephants8

Here they are sleeping it off. Do you think they have a hangover in the morning?

See How Social Media Affects Our Mental Health

Just how is social media affecting our mental health and well being?

social media

In 1971, the first email was delivered. More than 40 years on, social media has taken the world by storm. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are now used by 1 in 4 people worldwide. Such activity may seem harmless, but some researchers suggest social media may affect our mental health and well-being.

In 2012, Medical News Today reported on a study suggesting that Facebook use may feed anxiety and increase a person’s feeling of inadequacy.

A more recent study, led by social psychiatrist Ethan Cross of the University of Michigan, found that using Facebook may even make us miserable.

“On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection,” says Kross. “But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result – it undermines it.”

But are such claims exaggerated? Or should we be limiting our use of social media? Medical News Today looks at the evidence.

What Is Causing School Closings In American Samoa?

Just what the heck is causing all the school closings in American Samoa? Will they open back up on Monday?

school closings

In a news report on April 10, 2014 it was reported that the schools are closed in American Samoa for the rest of the week for an outbreak…read more below:

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) — American Samoa is keeping most schools closed for the rest of the week as the U.S. territory tries to contain a pink eye outbreak that has affected at least 2,400 students and teachers, disrupted court hearings and kept some passengers from boarding flights.

All 28 public schools were scheduled to reopen Wednesday after shutting down Friday. But only four schools in the remote island group of Manua are back in session. Officials in American Samoa, a group of islands in the South Pacific about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii, will keep schools on the main island of Tutuila shuttered until next week.

More than 30 percent of teachers are on sick leave because of conjunctivitis, a common eye condition better known as pink eye that can be extremely contagious, Education Department Director Salu Hunkin-Finau said.

“In order to help prevent the further spread of the pink eye virus, we highly recommend that all affected teachers and workers stay home,” she said. “Please keep your child out of reach (of) those that are affected by the pink eye.”

Conjunctivitis inflames tissue on the eyeball and lining the eyelid, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pink eye can be caused by viruses and bacteria as well as allergens, the CDC says.

Territory health officials say the outbreak is a nuisance but not very dangerous.

“It’s very rare for it to cause any serious damage to the eyes,” said Dr. Mark Durand, a health department physician. “And as far as we know, it’s never fatal.”

World Health Day 2014

Today is World Health Day in 2014.

The annual observance is being highlighted by the World Health Organization.

Aedes_aegypti_CDC-Gathany (1)

GENEVA, Switzerland, April 7 (UPI) — Each year since 1950, the World Health Organization has celebrated

World Health Day on April 7 as an occasion to promote pressing messages about global health.

This year’s message endeavors to educate the public that even the smallest of pests can carry disease. With its “Small Bite: Big Threat” initiative, WHO is sending the following message:

“Mosquitoes, flies, ticks and bugs may be a threat to your health — and that of your family — at home and when travelling.”

According to WHO, more than 50 percent of the world’s population is at risk of contracting vector spread diseases like malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis, and yellow fever. Such diseases, however, are preventable.

Simple steps can be taken to prevent becoming infected by the critters whose “small bites” carry a “big threat.” To protect yourself, WHO recommends “sleeping under a bednet, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and trousers and using insect repellent.”
